How to use
- Enter the fence length measured on the same basis as your installer’s quote.
- Fill in low and high installed rates for matching height, material, and site scope.
- Add gate and removal charges only when they are excluded from those rates.
How the estimate is calculated
Each total is fence length × its installed rate, plus gate count × price per gate, plus length × removal rate. The same gate and removal amounts are added at both ends of the range.
Example: 150 ft at $15–$25 per ft, plus one gate at an illustrative $300 and no removal, gives $2,550.00–$4,050.00. The gate amount is an example input, not a sourced gate price.
Reported ranges need matching scope
| Reference or input | Figure | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| NerdWallet citing Angi | $15–$25 per linear ft | Commercial summary; publication year absent, snapshot October 22, 2026 |
| Gate example above | 1 × $300 | Worked-example input only |
| Removal | User-entered $ per ft | No assumed removal price |
Replace these with your local quotes. An undated national excerpt cannot establish a current rate for wood, vinyl, aluminum, or chain link in your area. The optional reference selector can populate the reported general range, but material-specific prices are left to your quotes because the summaries we checked lack a traceable named source for each range.
Compare the fence, not just the rate
Height, terrain, access, and the chosen gate can change a contractor’s scope. Ask who handles permits and any HOA review, whether removal includes disposal, and how gate openings affect measured billable length. Record exclusions before comparing totals. This worksheet adds no permit charge, tax, or contingency on its own.
Common mistakes
- Charging a gate separately when it is already included in the installed rate.
- Comparing rates for different heights or fence materials.
- Multiplying removal by the full length when only part of the old fence is being removed.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the installed rate boxes blank?
The available general fence-cost excerpt has no publication year. Start with a dated local quote rather than treating that summary as a current default.
Can I use this for wood, vinyl, or chain link?
Yes, provided you enter rates for that exact material and scope. The tool does not infer a material’s local price.
Are gate openings counted in fence length?
Follow the quote’s measurement basis. Confirm whether openings are excluded and whether the gate price is separate before entering either amount.
What if only part of the old fence needs removal?
Convert the total removal quote into an equivalent rate over your entered length, or compare that separate charge outside the worksheet.
Does this include tax and permit costs?
Only if they are already covered by the rates you enter. No automatic tax or permit allowance is applied.
