How to use
- Add the wall and ceiling surfaces covered by the quote. Floor area alone is not drywall surface area.
- Enter the low and high installed rates for the same finish and scope of work.
- Use the range to compare quotes, then confirm exclusions directly with each contractor.
How the estimate is calculated
The lower total is surface area × low rate, and the upper total is area × high rate. The midpoint multiplies area by the average of the two rates. This arithmetic does not add sales tax, removal, repairs, or a minimum charge unless those items are already included in your entered rates.
Example: 500 sq ft at $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft gives $750.00–$1,750.00. The average rate is $2.50, so the midpoint is $1,250.00. The midpoint is an arithmetic reference, not a contractor's offer.
Example rates and their limits
| Source and date | Example figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| InchCalculator, 2026 guide | $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft | Installed example range; form defaults |
| Angi, 2026 guide | About $1–$2.10 per sq ft | Labor example, not the same as an installed total |
The project source snapshot was collected October 22, 2026. These commercial guide figures are dated examples, not current market prices. Replace these with your local quotes. Do not add a labor-only range to an installed rate that already includes labor.
Make the scope match before comparing
Ask whether the rate includes delivery, hanging panels, tape, compound, sanding, corner treatment, and the specified finish level. Ceiling work, access, texture matching, removal, and painting can change what is included. Get the measured surface area and the finish description in writing so a lower rate does not conceal a smaller scope.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying by floor area while the installer is quoting actual wall and ceiling area.
- Comparing labor-only pricing with a materials-and-labor quote.
- Reading a guide's example as a local price guarantee.
- Counting the same opening deduction differently in competing estimates.

Frequently asked questions
Is the example rate a current local price?
No. The defaults are a dated 2026 commercial-guide example. Replace them with quotes for your location, access, and finish scope.
Should I enter floor area or wall area?
Use the drywall surface being installed and finished, including ceilings only when the quote covers them.
What does the midpoint mean?
It is the average of your low and high totals. It does not predict the winning quote or add a contingency.
Are painting and removal included?
Only if your entered rates include them. This tool has no separate allowance for painting, demolition, disposal, or tax.
How do metric quote rates work?
In metric mode enter dollars per square meter and square meters of surface. Both area and rate convert when switching units, keeping the same scope.
