How to use
- Measure the actual patch area rather than the whole wall.
- Ask for a low and high repair rate covering the same finish.
- Enter the service minimum separately, including zero if none applies.
How the estimate is calculated
Each end of the range is the larger of the service minimum and patch area multiplied by that end’s rate. The minimum replaces a smaller subtotal; it is not added on top.
Example: 2 sq ft at $50–$75 per sq ft gives $100–$150 before the minimum. With a $150 service minimum, the displayed estimate is $150.00–$150.00. A separate 6 sq ft patch at those rates would be $300.00–$450.00.
Patch kits, trip charges, and texture matching
A DIY kit is a materials purchase, while a professional quote may include travel, setup, return visits, sanding, and matching a textured surface. This calculator estimates a professional rate-based quote; it does not estimate kit contents or claim that a kit produces the same finish.
| Figure | Value | Source and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Patch rate example | $50–$75 per sq ft | HomeAdvisor, 2025 commercial guide; summary only |
| Service minimum default | $150 | Tool planning allowance, not a sourced contractor charge |
Painting, texture matching, water-damage investigation, and disposal belong in the written quote scope. A patch-area calculation cannot determine the underlying cause of damage.
Common mistakes
- Adding the minimum to a subtotal that already exceeds it.
- Using installation rates for an isolated repair.
- Assuming a patched spot includes repainting the whole wall.

Frequently asked questions
Does a larger patch always cost more here?
Not while both rate-based totals remain below the service minimum. Once a subtotal exceeds that minimum, area affects that end of the range.
Is the $150 minimum from HomeAdvisor?
No. It is a tool planning value that you should replace with the contractor’s stated minimum.
Can I include several patches?
Combine their measured areas only if the contractor applies a single rate and minimum to that combined job.
Does this cover paint and texture?
Those tasks are included only if your repair rates explicitly cover them. Ask which finish and paint area the quote promises.
Why not use the drywall installation calculator?
Installation rates describe a broader hanging and finishing job. An isolated patch can have a different rate and a minimum visit charge.
